You will suffer through Hell. You will be burned in the fires of Hell. Over. And over. And over. You will turn to theft, even murder, all for a crumb of bread, only to watch it turn to ash in your mouth. You will butcher, rob your victims of their organs, all for a chance to get out, as you watch your Kinfolk vomit up black bile and die in the streets of plague. This game is Hell. But if there were ever a reason to fight your way through Hell, it is this game.. The steam page needs to detail that this is only 1\/3 of the game and not the full release. You play the story from the view of three different characters but right now there is only one character view to play. If you do enough searching there is a developer comment showing that they will release the rest later but that information is not found posted on the store page details else less people would be getting it till the game is finished. I find this to be false advertisement to gain sales when this is actually just a beta being shown as full released.I will not recommend this game till the store page is updated to reflect the current state of the partial game.. If you've played Pathologic before then I recommend otherwise I don't at this time.Simply put I think the Bachelor route is the best way to experience Pathologic your first time through but unfortunately Pathologic 2 (which is simply a remaster of the original) doesn't currently include said Bachelor route. Which I find rather bizarre of Ice-Pick Lounge since the Bachelor is clearly intended by the original developers to be your first choice as well. Instead you're forced to play the Haruspex route. The Bachelor gets almost all of the world-building exposition with only modest insights into the social structure, culture, mythos, etc. This being explained in-story as you, the Bachelor (and you the player), are a stranger to the city and so people are quick to explain the important landmarks and give warnings but aren't so quick to trust you with much information beyond that. This deliberately shallow understanding is then enriched with your 2nd playthrough as the Haruspex a.k.a. the "one of us" guy. Who gets virtually all of the deeper insights thrown in for free without the unnecessary world-building from the previous playthrough (as a former citizen of the city you would already "know" all of it). The problem is if you play Haruspex first then Bachelor then almost all of the mystery and intrigue of the Bachelor's route is ruined since there isn't much left for you, the player, to discover even if technically the character you're playing as is still ignorant. It's a pitfall new players simply wouldn't know about.. This game is so hard to rate I had trouble even knowing if I should. There is some genius hidden here: The mere concept of the game ('You have to survive hostile environments for 12 days while trying to solve a mystery') is surprisingly new and fascinating, the lore seems surprisingly deep and multi-faceted, many of the twists are legitimately interesting. However, the vast, vast, vast majority of your time will be spent micromanaging. Micromanaging your inventory, even with upgrades, is a constant chore. Micromanaging your hunger, even the first few days, is tedious. And after the plague hits, you will also have to micromanage immunity, clean water, the condition of your clothes, having to choose long roundabout ways to avoid the plague.. And on paper that sounds great, right? Having to be on the edge of survival, having to make hard choices? Maybe, if effective micromanagement did something besides lead you to more micromanagement. You are rapidly so concerned about filling your meters that doing anything else feels dangerous. You begin having to reload constantly to find more efficient ways of playing out your day. You begin considering starting over entirely in the vague hope that more efficient use of the first days might have things go differently. You stare at the screen, realising you have spent several hours achieving literally nothing. If this is the "intended" vision of the game designers, they have succeeded. But they have succeeded in producing a game that, instead of being an interesting look at scarcity and desperation, ends up producing nothing except frustration at the underlying mechanics. I might look at it again and change my review if the promised difficulty slider doesn't lock off content and belittle you for taking "the easy way out", though I fear that is going to be the case.. The remake\\reimagining of one of my favorite games ever. This is a one of a kind game that is absolutely NOT for everyone. Do not go into this expecting high octane action or jump scares. It's a slow burn thriller with a depressing and bizarre narrative. If you're looking for more quick thrills, play We Happy Few. This is the purest survival sim you'll ever find. Games like DayZ and Rust fail to simulate realistic survival since you're rewarded more for killing each other than working together with no real end goal in sight. In Pathologic, reputation is everything. You don't want to get on everyone's bad side otherwise they won't talk to you, trade with you, and they might just kill you on sight. The worse the town is, the harder your ability to complete your nearly impossible mission is. The social dynamic here is unmatched by any game. However, the game has some big flaws. Two patches later, it still runs like crap. I have a 1080 Ti and I play in 4k which shouldn't be a problem given the small world and dated graphics. However, while I get 60 FPS most of the time, it does dip often. Every conversation makes the game run at 45 FPS and the game just randomly drops in frame rate while navigating the town. There are a few graphical glitches I've found. The translation, while very good, has several grammatical errors. There's also the price given the content available. The original game gave three playable characters out of the box. This only has The Haruspex with the other two being released later. How will this be priced? Will they be their own games or DLC? Is it really worth spending more money to go through the same 12 day plague in the same town at the same time? We'll see. The hunger and thirst mechanics back when the original came out were cutting edge, but now, like We Happy Few, feels really dated and more annoying than anything. The plague system is still state of the art though and is the biggest selling point. How many people can you save? How long can you last without getting infected? How many quests will you abandon? How far are you willing to go to survive and find a cure?. The Gut - "No One Cares About You"The Hindquaters - "No One Cares About You"The Cemetery - "You're Always Welcome Here"This game does an amazing job at being a remake of the original game, while also being an amazing game on it's own accord. Everything from the gameplay, to the story, and to the aesthetics satisfy in a unique way that only Pathologic 2 and Ice Pick Lodge are able to achieve. For those who are concerned on the game's difficulty, it hits that perfect spot of being difficult to the point where success (no matter how small) gives a sense of accomplishment that I have not experienced in a long, long time with video games. I feel a lot of people reviewing this game make it sound harder than it really is, and it's very easy to get into the swing of things. There are many ways to survive the days, which helps mix up the gameplay and ensures that no matter how far along you are, you'll never be bored. The only tip I want to give is combat is best done by entering sneak mode (default C) and getting backstabs on unaware enemies. Otherwise, there is no penalty for running away.tl;dr This is a game where "unique" isn't just a buzzword on the back of the box, and I feel that everyone considering it should definitely give it a chance and break out of their comfort zone with something new.. This is the most atmospheric and immersive game I have ever played, and i love it.Pathologic 2 is a remake of the original Pathologic that came out in '05, the original was a very rough, very difficult and poorly explained game. This remake manages to fix every problem i had with the original game and more, every aspect of the game has been rebalanced and polished so that nothing distracts you from the mood and story of the world. The world is full of history and lore that isnt explained to the player through exposition, but rather through conversation with the locals and riddles given by strange characters you meet through the game. Even the tutorials of the game manage to feel like part of the world, with every game mechanic being contextualized somehow. The horror aspect of the game comes in from not only the writing, environment and characters, but the game mechanics themselves. Understanding that you must not only keep yourself fed and healthy, but that you must also watch the health of various important people makes every day tense and terrifying, going as quickly as your health will allow to be sure you accomplish all you need to do each day before the clock counts over. Some may argue that the survival mechanics are poorly implemented or add little to the game, but i very mush disagree, i find that the unforgiving nature of it makes it feel like you cant make any mistakes, that any slip up will result in absolute failure and everyone in the Town will die because of your actions. This game is absolutely not for everyone, and I wouldn't recommend it if you are not a fan of very slow, difficult games that may not exactly be perfectly made. However, if recent news is true, the developers will add in difficulty options to make the game more lenient for any player that wishes to simply experience the world and story laid out by Ice-Pick Lodge, even if it is not exactly in the way the devs originally intended.I hope that my quickly slapped together review can help you decide if you are interested in this game, and if you are, I truly hope you enjoy it as much as I have, Bayarlaa Khatangher. What a terrible game, it's great!. The adventures of a narcoleptic, diabetic voodoo witch doctor with a pocket full of lemons, who starves to death if he takes twelve uninterrupted steps without stuffing an entire roast chicken down his throat, as he hustles toddlers for buckshot.. Nothing is clear and this is even more interesting. Nobody does the games like this today so if you are bored from AAA games which looks the same from year to year try to find out what is going on in this city.
